George Herbert Harries papers, 1891-1898.

The papers consist of a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings of articles regarding the Wounded Knee Massacre written by Harries for The Evening Star newspaper of Washington, D.C., and by other journalists, and articles on Harries's army service during the Spanish-American War. The scrapbook also contains ten autograph and typed letters of reference written for Harries by his editor and members of the U. S. military and Congress when he travelled to Pine Ridge, South Dakota, to cover the events following the massacre, as well as two TL carbons of letters dated 1891 Jan 1 and 1890 Dec 31, written by S. M. Whiteside, Major, and James W. Forsyth, Colonel, of the 7th Cavalry, 1st Battalion, reporting on the incident to the Regimental Adjutant and the Acting Assistant Adjutant General. Six holograph and typed manuscripts on American Indians and journalism accompany the scrapbook.

George Herbert Harries (b. Sept. 19, 1860, South Wales, U.K.-d. Sept. 28, 1934), Major General in the U. S. Army, was a volunteer aide to General Miles in the Wounded Knee Campaign, South Dakota in 1890 and 1891.
